What You Can Do To Help
1
EDUCATE YOURSELF
When it comes to combating racial generalizations, stereotypes, and prejudices, sometimes the best weapon we can equip ourselves with is knowledge. Having a full understanding and/or working towards having a full understanding of racism and its detriments can help us better understand the importance of our fight for equity. Some films that do an amazing job of providing us with this knowledge include 13th and When They See Us-- Netflix originals directed by Ava DuVernay. In addition to these films, books and novels such as Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson and Between The World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates also do an extraordinary job of exposing the hindering effects of racism on the Black Community.
CALL IT OUT
2
"If you see something, say something." This general rule of thumb is especially important when denouncing racism. Oftentimes, we allow strangers, friends, and even family to spew rhetorics of hatred because we believe it is not our place to correct them. But if it's not ours then whose is it? As a citizen, you are equally responsible for cultivating environments of inclusivity. If you hear discriminatory, prejudice, or racist remarks being spread, call them out vigilantly but firmly.
3
SPREAD AWARENESS
Whether it be through approved posters in your school's hallways or through validated social media posts, we can all take part in making those around us aware of the damages of racism. Rejecting ignorance and complacency is always an amazing place to start.
DONATE
4
Help keep those nonprofits that provide essential services to the Black Community and other minority groups up and running. Donations as small as $5 can help these organizations continue the invaluable work they've been doing to help reverse the damaging effects of racism in education, employment, legal defense, etc. As stated previously, 10% of the profits from every order will be directly donated to nonprofit organizations including The NAACP and ACLU. 5
SUPPORT BLACK BUSINESSES
Much like this one, there are other Black businesses across the country that provide goods and services which help uplift the Black Community. Even the act of owning and operating a business is an act of rebellion in a nation where Black Americans were never meant to obtain wealth or a stable economic status. Some Black-owned businesses worth checking out include The HoneyPot Company, The LipBar, 3 some Chocolates, Red Bay Coffee and Beauty Bakerie.
